INFORMATION DESIGN & GENERATIVE ART

MOTION DESIGN

Plotting school courses is never an easy task, especially if you're an exchange student. Since other exchange / Erasmus students I know in Bauhaus-Universität Weimar share a similar experience as I do, I created a scatter plot and a pen-plotted poster series.

The goal is to enhance information clarity and visual appeal targeted towards the Kunst & Gestaltung Bauhaus university students.

With the opening of the New Student Centre in the spring of 2018-19 study year, my task was to create multiple TV and Instagram ads consistent with the new brand of York University Student Centre.

Owning a car is a dream for many, but are youths fully aware of its cost? And how can I develop youths' interest in the high cost of auto insurance rates?

Choosing Toronto neighbourhood as the main topic, I delved deeper on Toronto auto insurance rates as a starting point. The goal was to raise awareness to the group of people that are least exposed to the issue but who desired car ownership the most — youths.

THE PROBLEM

Students, unfortunately, have to click every course link to find out about its important information. Why?

  •  The university offers German and English-based courses, so finding the language requirement is crucial since most exchange students are English speakers.
  • ECTS credits of a course can offer up to 18 credits (usually a Projektmodul), but can also offer none at all.

Furthermore, some of the courses promote themselves through posters and flyers. Although they are all under the Bauhaus.Semester curriculum, the posters are not cohesively designed.

With the scatter plot, students can quickly see the courses based on the language requirement, ECTS credits offered, class location, module type, and its grading method from the get-go.

With algorithm-based posters, all 39 courses have their own visually distinctive and cohesive posters that can encourage each of the course's student enrollment.

Every pattern is then printed with a HP7475A plotter and Micron 0.5 fineliner as its pen.

GAME DEVELOPMENT & PRINTED INTERFACES
(IN PROGRESS)

Bau Ein Bauhaus is a collaborative and interactive printed interfaces game for the general public. Rebuild Bauhaus works by putting a piece of each work to the right position and color using paper as your controller.

KEY TAKEAWAY

Seek (design) knowledge even onto China Germany
I am fortunate to be able to celebrate the Bauhaus anniversary by actually experiencing its Gesamtkunstwerk ideal (a.k.a. interdisciplinary study). Coming from a Specialized Honours program like YSDN, this project has definitely broadened the possibilities I see in graphic design with other disciplines. I couldn't be more excited to create more in the future!
